Laser removal of tattoos and eyebrows - everything you need to know about this procedure
Because of the desire for a change, many are turning to laser removal of tattoos and eyebrows. But how exactly does this technology remove imprinted colors from the skin? We will explain in the following text.
What are all the ways to remove tattoos?

Successful tattoo removal depends on several factors. From the size of the tattoo, the place where it was done, from the body and age of the tattoo to the way it was done… But also from the way it is removed.
It is important to emphasize that professionally done tattoos are easier to remove because the color is evenly applied to the same depth in the skin.
There are several ways to remove a tattoo, but most of them are not applicable to eyebrows or are outdated and can leave scars:
- Laser tattoo removal is effective and applicable to eyebrows as well, and represents the gold standard because this method is SAFE and COMFORTABLE. The laser acts directly and precisely on the pigment, without affecting the surrounding skin.
- With dermabrasion, the tattoo is removed by “sandblasting” the skin with abrasive paste and a brush or disc in order to remove the surface layer containing the color, and there is a possibility of scarring. Not applicable to eyebrows.
- Cryosurgery requires the area of the tattoo to be frozen, meaning the tattoo is removed using liquid nitrogen by freezing the pigment. This method can also leave scars and is not applicable to eyebrows.
- Salicylic acid tattoo removal is actually a chemical peel that causes the skin to peel to remove the pigment. It is not ideal for eyebrows and it can take several months to several years for the pigment to be removed.
- Exfoliation removes the tattoo by removing the surface layers of the skin with a special device that exfoliates the skin, it is not applicable to the eyebrows and requires many repetitions with an uncertain result.
- Surgical tattoo removal requires the removal of a section of skin, and sometimes requires skin grafting from other parts of the body. It often leaves very visible scars and cannot be used on eyebrows.
Because of the benefits it has, laser removal of tattoos and eyebrows has become the gold standard in the modern world.

Which laser do we use at the Diva Polyclinic to remove tattoos and eyebrows?
When choosing a laser to be used for successful tattoo and eyebrow removal, it is important to choose one that has strong enough energy to affect different colors.
This is exactly what the NANO Q SWITCHED laser is like, because it has 2 different wavelengths that target the entire color spectrum.
How does laser tattoo and eyebrow removal work?
Laser removal of tattoos and eyebrows is done with a specialized laser that emits light at certain wavelengths. The laser we use at the Diva Polyclinic is designed to precisely target the pigment in the tattoo or eyebrow without damaging the surrounding tissue.
When the laser penetrates the skin, its light is absorbed by the pigment of the tattoo. During the procedure, the laser beam uses a photoacoustic effect to break the pigment into small fragments, which are then removed by cells of the immune system, phagocytes, while the surrounding tissue remains intact.

The process may require multiple treatments, depending on the size, color and age of the tattoo or eyebrow.
Elimination of dispersed pigment by phagocytosis takes 8 to 10 weeks after the procedure when the treatment is repeated.
What pigment can this laser remove?
Colors that are easily removed by laser:
- Black
- Dark blue
- Dark brown
- Dark green
Colors that are more difficult to remove with a laser:
- Light blue
- Light green
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
This is because the laser targets the pigment of the tattoo, and different colors of pigment absorb light in different ways. The laser used for tattoo removal has a specific wavelength that is matched to the wavelength of certain pigment colors. Thus, the laser will be more effective in breaking up pigments that absorb light at the same wavelength.
QSW 1064 nm is ideal for treating darker tattoos, while the 532 nm wavelength is effective for treating lighter colors including red and orange.
And the high degree of possibility of adjusting the parameters of this laser to the individual needs of each patient enables excellent results to be achieved.
How many treatments are needed for laser tattoo and eyebrow removal?
The number of treatments as well as the final effect when performing laser tattoo and eyebrow removal depends on the color or number of colors on the tattoo (multi-colored tattoos require a greater number of treatments), the surface and density of the color application, the type of color used, the depth of the tattoo, localization, skin type as well as the patient’s individual reactions to laser treatment.
In order to remove the tattoo, it is necessary to do a series of treatments. Most often 3 to 5 treatments for eyebrows or 5 to 8 treatments for body tattoos with breaks of 8 to 10 weeks between procedures.

How long does the tattoo and eyebrow removal treatment take?
The duration of the treatment depends on the size of the tattoo being removed and can be from 10 minutes (for smaller tattoos) to 45 minutes (for larger tattoos).
Does tattoo and eyebrow removal hurt?
During the removal of the tattoo, a slight stinging sensation is felt because forced cooling is used using a special cooling device, which numbs the treatment. Our patients describe this procedure as quite comfortable.

Laser removal of tattooed eyebrows
In the last ten years, eyebrow tattooing has become very popular. Japanese, powder, tattooed eyebrows, microblading – there are different techniques used to make the eyebrows symmetrical, well-shaped and look as natural as possible. However, if the eyebrows are not satisfactory, or there is a need to change the color, the solution is laser removal of tattooed eyebrows.
As with tattoo removal, the choice for eyebrow removal is the NANO Q SWITCHED laser. This is because it only affects the pigment, but not the surrounding tissue. Recovery takes a short time, only about 2 days. The treatment is quick and lasts about ten minutes. It takes about 3 days for the pigment to fade, which depends on the individual characteristics of the patient and the type of tattoo.
Ideally, this procedure can be done throughout the year, regardless of the season.
Laser removal of tattoos and eyebrows – experiences
Milena. L. from Belgrade shared her experience with eyebrow tattoo removal:
“My experience is excellent! At the beginning, during the free consultation, I had a lot of questions for the doctor, who answered them all. She explained to me how the process works, what I can expect and how many treatments will be needed. I decided to have my eyebrows lasered because I wasn’t happy with how they looked, and the color didn’t match my hair color. The procedure itself is quite fast. After each treatment, I had slight redness that lasted for about a day. Gradually, the tattoo on my eyebrows became paler and after 3 treatments I was satisfied with the final result.

What does a tattoo and eyebrow removal treatment look like?
First, the area of skin to be treated with the laser is cleaned. Given that a cooling system is used during the procedure that numbs the entire process, there is no need for anesthesia. The laser beam is then directed at the location of the tattoo and targets the pigment exactly where it is in the skin. During the procedure, patients wear safety glasses.
It is interesting that the laser not only removes tattoos and eyebrows, but also acts on the regeneration of the skin in that place, because it stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
Are there any side effects?
Immediately after the treatment, there may be slight swelling and redness, which is an expected reaction of the skin and is of a transient nature (passes on average in a maximum of 2 to 3 days).
Is laser tattoo and eyebrow removal safe?
It is, and that is one of the reasons for the popularity of this procedure, because there are no scars or damage. The laser is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
