What are keloids - keloid scars?
- distinctly red in color, due to the formation of numerous new blood vessels,
- raised in relation to the surrounding skin,
- they are irregularly shaped,
- hard to the touch,
- smooth and shiny surfaces.
They can be painfully sensitive and an unpleasant itching sensation is often expressed.
Sometimes weeks and sometimes months pass until keloids appear on the skin. At first, they are red-brown in color, and as time passes, they change to light pink. When a keloid scar reaches a certain size, it stops growing.
Our specialist doctors, who have extensive and long-term experience, will assess the condition of the skin, which laser is optimal, what results can be expected, and how many treatments are needed to remove keloid during a free consultation.

How are keloids or keloid scars formed?
The cause of keloid formation is a disorder in the wound healing mechanism characterized by excessive production and swelling of collagen fibers and connective tissue even over the edges of the wound.
Keloids can vary in appearance, firmness, shape, demarcation, and location.
These scars are formed during the wound healing process after:
- surgical interventions,
- injury,
- inflammatory processes on the skin,
- deeper cuts,
- after burns,
- due to chemical damage to the skin,
- after an insect bite,
- during the process of healing acne – acne keliodales,
- and sometimes spontaneously, but it is assumed that their origin was due to unregistered microtraumas.
It is assumed that keloids are the result of genetic predisposition and according to medical statistics, they occur with a frequency of 4 to 5% in the total population.
They never go away spontaneously, and often after inadequate treatments, they tend to come back again.
Various studies on the quality of life indicate that keloid scars have a functional, aesthetic or psychosocial impact on people who have them.
How do keloid scars differ from hypertrophic ones?
Keloids differ from hypertrophic scars in that
- most often they swell far beyond the edges of the wound,
- they grow rapidly and
- they never decrease spontaneously,
in contrast to hypertrophic scars, which always form within the edges of the wound and spontaneously decrease over time.
Therefore, keloid scars never go away spontaneously, and often after treatment they tend to return again.
Who is most likely to develop keloids?
Do age and gender have an effect on whether a keloid scar will appear?
Various studies indicate that keloids occur more often in patients between the ages of 20 and 35 and more often in women than in men. And they occur less often in the elderly or in children.

Does skin type affect whether keloids will appear?
Keloid scars occur more often in patients with a skin phototype of the III to VI Fitzpatrick scale.
Advice from a specialist doctor
People who have a tendency to the formation of keloids are not advised to perform surgical interventions on the predilection regions of the skin.
In which regions do keloid scars occur most often?
The regions on the face and body where keloids most often appear are:
- chest,
- shoulders,
- back,
- the area of the lower jaw and chin and
- auricle,
- and very rarely on the palms and soles.

How are keloids treated? How to remove a keloid scar?
Treatment of keloids is a great medical and aesthetic challenge because their reaction to therapy cannot be predicted with certainty.
Treatment of keloids depends on their size, number and the region being treated.
After several decades of experience in the treatment of keloids at the Diva Polyclinic, we can confirm with certainty that the Fractionated ER:Yag laser is the most effective and safest therapy in the treatment of keloids.
Fractionated ER Yag laser treatment - keloid removal
The fractionated Er Yag:laser has been shown in clinical practice to be extremely effective in the treatment of these complex scars and can be used alone or in combination with intralesional corticosteroid injection.
The laser has a double effect on keloid scars. He by fractional ablation of the keloid surface
- reduces its height and
- at the same time, it closes newly formed blood vessels, which prevents neosynthesis of collagen and enables its degradation.
How many Fractionated ER Yag Laser treatments are needed to treat keloids?
The recommendation is 3 to 5 treatments with breaks of 4 to 6 weeks between treatments.
Is keloid scar removal painful?
The treatments are painless and without the use of local anesthesia and do not require recovery considering that it is a modern fractional technology that allows the skin in the treated area to be renewed within 24 hours.
What are the benefits of the Fractionated Er:Yag laser when treating keloids?
After treating the skin at the location of the keloid scar with a Fractionated Er:Yag laser
- the thickness of the scar decreases,
- relieves its red discoloration and
- significantly reduces sensitivity to pain.
In addition to reducing the thickness of the scar, the laser also leads to its softening, because it stimulates collagen remodeling in the dermis.
What are the benefits of laser treatment for keloid scars?

Combination therapy for the treatment of keloid scars
Sometimes, when dealing with giant keloids or extremely thick keloids, it is necessary to combine laser therapy with intralesional injection of corticosteroids.
What is an intralesional corticosteroid injection?
It is a therapy that involves injecting corticosteroids into the area of the scar itself. After this procedure, the scar is further reduced and softened, which accelerates its regression in combination with laser treatment.
The application of this drug is usually done with breaks of 4 to 8 weeks. The number of repetitions is individual and can be 2 to 4 times.
What combination of treatments will be applied, the specialist doctors at the Diva Polyclinic decide during consultations, which are FREE.
NOTE:
Whether this procedure is the right choice for a certain type and condition of the skin will be assessed by a specialist doctor during a free consultation, and accordingly propose an adequate procedure. How many treatments are needed is individual and depends on several factors.
The results of the procedure may vary from patient to patient and are influenced by a number of factors including genetics, hormonal status and lifestyle of each individual.
