What are papillomas?
Papillomas are small growths on the skin of viral origin. They can be single, but more often they are multiple soft skin-colored or hyperpigmented growths. The sizes are usually several millimeters. Often on a thin stalk.
They usually do not cause any problems except in the case of chronic irritation or if the vascular pedicle is injured or twisted, when there is inflammation, sudden growth and pain.
Where do papillomas most often occur?
Papillomas , also known as ” hanging warts “ , belong to viral warts and are the most common
- on the neck,
- in the armpit area,
- on the upper body
- and eyelids .
What do papillomas look like?
They can be conical, conical or mushroom-shaped, up to 3 mm in size , normal skin color to dark brown.

How to recognize papillomas?
Patients often confuse them with moles, warts or keratoses. Sometimes they are also called “hanging moles”, which can be understood considering that there is a similarity in appearance.
When their irritation occurs, they can also change color, and then it is sometimes very difficult to distinguish them from ordinary moles. Certainly, it is recommended that you schedule an examination with a specialist doctor, in order to determine what kind of change it is.
What are the causative factors of papilloma?
Human papillomaviruses have been proven to be the causative agents of papillomas. Infection with this virus is possible through direct contact. The time from contact to the appearance of papillomas is up to 6 months. Predisposing factors for the appearance of papillomas are:
- obesity,
- hormonal imbalance and
- chronic irritation.
Given that they have a viral origin, there is a possibility of independent spread throughout the body from one place to another (autoinoculation) and transmission of the virus to persons with whom the patient is in close contact.
Why should papillomas be treated vigorously - why is it important to remove papillomas?
Removing papillomas prevents their further spread on the skin because they are of viral origin and are easily dispersed.
The aesthetic aspect of treating skin with papillomas is also very important, because by removing them, healthy skin without growths is regained.
It is very important that if there is a large number of papillomas, they should be removed at the same time to prevent further spread and transmission.
In addition to the above, irritation and bleeding may occur in cases where they are in an awkward place.
Sometimes there is also their sudden growth and twisting, which also creates a feeling of discomfort.
